Venice’s Waters Turn Fluorescent Green Near Rialto Bridge
International Desk, 29 May: The main canal in Venice became neon green on Sunday in the vicinity of the Rialto bridge and the cause is being investigated, according to the Italian fire department.
According to a tweet from the department, the regional environmental protection agency has received samples of the colored waters and is attempting to determine the component that caused the change.
According to reports, the prefect of Venice has ordered an urgent gathering of the police forces to discuss what transpired and potential solutions.
The incident is reminiscent of recent events in Italy when environmentalists have colored landmarks including turning the waters of Rome’s Trevi fountain black in a protest against fossil fuels using vegetable charcoal.
However, no activist group has stepped out to take responsibility for what occurred in Venice in contrast to earlier instances.
Moreover, this is not the first time that the Grand Canal has turned green. Earlier on June 19, the Argentina artist Nicolas Garcia Uriburu dyed the waters green with a florescent dye during the 34th Venice Biennale in a stunt to promote ecological awareness.
