Cyclone Biparjoy: Trees Uprooted in Kutch, 2 Killed and 23 Injured
National Desk, 16 June: Cyclone Biparjoy completely disrupted life in Gujarat’s Kutch area with its powerful winds and torrential rain. Numerous places have experienced power outages while numerous trees have been uprooted. It began weakening in the early hours of Friday as it moved North.
The extremely dangerous cyclonic storm made landfall in the coastal districts on Thursday evening, injuring 23 persons. Two other people were reportedly killed before the cyclone made landfall, according to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
Up till 2.30 a.m., Cyclone Biparjoy was centred over the Saurashtra-Kutch region, 30 kilometres north of Naliya. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), it was forecast to proceed northeastward and deteriorate into a cyclonic storm by early Friday morning and into a depression by the same evening across south Rajasthan.
Chief minister of Gujarat Bhupendra Patel and the prime minister Narendra Modi spoke on the phone to assess the situation. PM Modi also inquired about the specifics of the lions and other wild animals’ safety measures in Gir Forest.
The cyclonic storm made landfall near Jakhau Port on Thursday evening but it quickly lost strength. By 2:30 am on Friday, the winds were only gusting to 110 km/h, according to the IMD.
According to Gujarat’s relief commissioner Alok Singh, 940 villages are without electricity as a result of 524 trees falling, 24 animals being killed and 24 electric poles falling in some locations.
Mandvi town experienced a complete loss of power. Due to the severe gusts, many trees were uprooted on the Jakhau-Mandvi road and in Mandvi town. District collector Amit Arora stated that no casualties had been reported as of yet.
The Western Railway reported that 99 trains that pass through, originate in, or end in Gujarati communities affected by Biparjoy will continue to be cancelled or short-terminated.
According to the Gujarati government, 1 lakh individuals left coastal and low-lying districts to seek shelter.
Pakistan’s minister for climate change Sherry Rehman stated that 82,000 people had been evacuated from southeast coastal areas due to “a cyclone the likes of which Pakistan has never experienced.”
In Karachi, which is home to around 20 million people flooding was predicted to exceed four metres due to storm surges.
