International Yoga Day: PM Modi virtually addresses nation from US

National Desk, 21 June: On the occasion of International Yoga Day on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually addressed the nation stating that India has always fostered traditions that unify, adopt and embrace. He also fervently urged people to use yoga to get rid of their conflicts and resistances.

“Yoga strengthens such feelings, expands the inner vision, and connects us with that consciousness which makes us feel the unity of the living being giving a basis of love for the living being,” the PM said.

Modi who is on a three-day state visit to the US, will practise yoga with the UN leadership later in the day at the UN headquarters.

The UN proclaimed June 21 as International Day of Yoga by passing a resolution on December 11, 2014 during the 69th session of the General Assembly. At the session, PM Modi had said, “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition…. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.”

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also practised yoga in the Dhubri district to commemorate the present International Yoga Day celebration.

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar oversaw the nation’s commemoration of Yoga Day in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. Dhankar emphasised the significance of this year’s subject and pointed out that it captures the richness and diversity of Indian culture. “It is ‘Vasudhav Kutumbakam Ke Liye Yoga’, which means one earth, one family, and one future, and this is also the theme of the G20, which the country is currently chairing,” he said.

Along with the VP, other guests at Jabalpur’s Garrison Ground were the state’s BJP president and MP Vishnu Dutt Sharma, Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and three Union ministers: Virendra Kumar, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Prahlad Patel.
