Assam govt to build first ever underwater rail road tunnel
Guwahati, 24 June: Assam government is considering to construct northeast India’s first-ever rail-road tunnel under the Brahmaputra river as a strategic move.
Addressing a public gathering, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “I have a dream, will it be possible to construct a tunnel under Brahmaputra which can accommodate both rails as well as motor.”
Additionally, Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that the high command in Delhi had questioned him regarding the viability of building a tunnel under the Brahmaputra.
After thorough deliberation, it was agreed to build a rail-road underwater tunnel between Gohpur and Numaligarh with an estimated cost of Rs 6000 crore.
The chief minister further mentioned that assuming all goes according to plan, construction on this project will begin during his term and that the first tender for preparing the DIPR for land selection will open on July 4, 2023.
It should be noted that PM Modi has already given his approval for the project to connect the Brahmaputra’s north and south.
