Rahul Gandhi to land in Imphal soon, to visit relief camps

National Desk, 29 June: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to arrive in violence hit Manipur on Thursday for a two-day visit. During his visit, Congress leader is scheduled to meet those who have been displaced by the ethnic hostilities in relief camps and speak with civil society organisations, according to party officials.

Rahul Gandhi is making his first trip to the state in the northeast since the outbreak of violence on May 3.

Gandhi is expected to visit relief camps in the Churachandpur area after arriving in Imphal. After that, he will visit Moirang in the Bishnupur district and speak with displaced people, a senior Congress leader stated.

The Congress leader added, “Gandhi will visit relief camps in Imphal on Friday and would afterwards have discussions with specific civil society organisations.

On the other hand, Rahul Gandhi was criticised by the BJP for visiting Manipur, calling him a “political opportunist who wants to keep the pot boiling.”

Notably, as many as 50,000 people are staying in more than 300 relief camps throughout the state since ethnic clashes started on May 3 after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. So far, the conflicts have claimed more than 100 lives.
