Meiteis Leave Mizoram Amid Safety Concerns, Arrive in Assam’s Cachar District
Guwahati, 23rd July: Meiteis of Manipur, who were residing in Mizoram, have begun leaving the state and arriving in Assam’s Cachar district, following a 24-hour ultimatum issued by the Peace Accord MNF Returnees’ Association (PAMRA). The association instructed Meitei community members in Mizoram to depart for their own safety.
Sources report that a group of 40 Meiteis, including several children, left their homes in Mizoram and reached Cachar’s Lakhipur. In response, the Cachar district administration has established shelter camps to provide humanitarian aid and security to the displaced individuals.
Additionally, the Cachar district administration is making arrangements to relocate the affected Meiteis to Manipur. It is estimated that there are still over 2000 Meiteis residing in Mizoram.
Meanwhile, the Manipur Government has expressed plans to evacuate the Meiteis from Mizoram by airlifting them through chartered flights. However, specific details regarding the commencement of the evacuation process have not been disclosed.
The PAMRA’s decision to ask Meiteis to leave Mizoram comes after a horrific incident in Manipur, where two women of the Kuki-Zo tribe were paraded naked and allegedly gang-raped, leading to widespread outrage and concern. In response, the Mizoram Police have enhanced security measures by deploying an adequate police force in various locations to ensure the safety of Meiteis residing in Aizawl.
