Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi Files No-Confidence Motion Against Central Government Amid Manipur Ethnic Conflict Ruckus
National Desk, 26th July: Congress MP from Assam, Gaurav Gogoi, took a significant step on Wednesday by filing a no-confidence motion against the Central government in the Lok Sabha. The motion comes in the wake of escalating turmoil over the ethnic conflict in Manipur, India.
On Tuesday, the INDIA (Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance) parties collectively decided to move the no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government in the Lok Sabha. The move reflects the growing discontent and demand for answers on the Manipur issue.
Opposition MPs expressed that the no-confidence motion is a way to seek a direct response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the situation in Manipur. Congress leader Manickam Tagore emphasized that the decision to file the motion was taken collectively, and the party leader acted on it promptly. The opposition’s intention is to challenge what they perceive as the government’s arrogance and compel PM Modi to address the situation in Manipur before Parliament.
Both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha have witnessed tumultuous scenes in recent days as opposition members protested, demanding a statement from PM Modi on the Manipur issue. The proceedings in the two Houses have been repeatedly adjourned since the commencement of the monsoon session of Parliament on July 20, adding to the urgency of seeking answers.
Notably, a no-confidence motion is a significant parliamentary procedure that enables the opposition to question the government’s majority and its ability to govern effectively. If the motion is passed, the government is compelled to resign from office. In the Lok Sabha, any member has the authority to move a no-confidence motion, making it a powerful tool in the hands of the opposition.
