Assam Police Officer Suspended for Alleged Bribery Involvement with Cattle Smugglers

Guwahati, 5th August: The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ambagan Police Station in Nagaon district, Assam, Hemanta Kalita, faced suspension on Saturday for allegedly accepting bribes from cattle smugglers.

Incidents of corruption came to light when a video emerged, capturing the accused cop’s engagement in the illicit activity. In the footage, Home Guard Jawan Hifzur Rahman can be seen collecting money from a truck transporting cattle near the police station.

Nabaneet Mahanta, the superintendent of police in Nagaon, acted swiftly in response to the video evidence by suspending Hemanta Kalita from his duties. Furthermore, Hifzur Rahman was dismissed from his service. An official investigation into the matter has been ordered to ascertain the extent of their involvement and to ensure accountability.
