Gauhati High Court Upholds 15% Reservation for OBC and MOBC Candidates in Medical Colleges of Assam

Guwahati, 7th August: The Gauhati High Court has issued a ruling in favor of retaining the 15 percent reservation for candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBC) and More Other Backward Classes (MOBC) in Postgraduate Degree and Diploma Courses offered by Medical Colleges in Assam.

On August 3, the court expressed concerns about the application of the reservation policy and asked the state government for explanation regarding the lack of a categorization based on economic position (Non-Creamy Layer) for OBC reservations.

However, in its recent ruling, the division bench, consisting of Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice S. P. Khaund, upheld the reservation quota for OBC and MOBC candidates. The decision ensures that eligible candidates from these categories have equal opportunities for pursuing higher education in the medical field.

The verdict comes as a significant boost for students aspiring to pursue medical education from OBC and MOBC backgrounds, paving the way for increased representation and inclusivity in the medical colleges of Assam.
