Women MPs Walk Out of Rajya Sabha Protesting Ex-CJI Gogoi’s Speech

National Desk, 8th August: Four female Members of Parliament (MPs) left the Rajya Sabha on Monday during the inaugural speech of former Chief Justice of India (CJI) and nominee Ranjan Gogoi in a notable show of protest. The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was supported by the ex-CJI, who had been accused of sexual harassment during his term.

The four female MPs who exited the house were Sushmita Dev of the TMC, Priyanka Chaturvedi of the Shiv Sena (UBT), Vandana Chavan of the NCP, and Jaya Bachchan of the Samajwadi Party. They objected to Gogoi’s participation in the conversation in spite of the sexual harassment claims made against him.

During his tenure as CJI, Gogoi was accused of sexual harassment by a former subordinate court officer in 2019. A month later, he was exonerated by an internal committee of Supreme Court judges.

The women MPs made the decision to leave the upper chamber in protest of Gogoi’s attendance and involvement in the discussion, given the seriousness of the allegations against him, as he spoke to the Rajya Sabha for the first time since joining in 2020.
