Deputy Superintendent of Police Arrested in Assam Corruption Scandal
Assam, 4th September: After three days of intensive questioning, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Puskal Gogoi was arrested by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Assam on Sunday night, marking a significant development in the ongoing corruption case in Bajali.
Sources reveal that DSP Gogoi’s arrest followed the earlier apprehensions of former Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Gayatri Sonowal and her husband Bobby Singh Sharma earlier in the day.
The roots of this investigation trace back to September 1 when the CID detained seven individuals, including five police officers from Bajali Police, and two drivers, all facing bribery allegations. The detained police officers included Puskal Gogoi, Dy SP (HQ) of Bajali, SI Anup Jyoti Patiri, O/C of Patacharkuchi PS, SI (P) Debajit Giri, in charge of Bhawanipur OP under Patacharkuchi PS, ASI Sasanka Das of Patacharkuchi PS, and ABC Injamamul Hassan, PSO of Smti Gayatri Sonowal, the then Addl SP (HQ) of Bajali. The drivers implicated in the unlawful activities were Deepjoy Roy and Nabir Ahmed.
The arrest of DSP Gogoi stems from allegations made by a supari businessman, triggering a thorough investigation.
It was discovered that following a complaint about extortion demands, the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, set up a trap in early August, although the officers became cautious and evaded the initial operation. However, subsequent investigations deemed the complaint to be prima facie accurate, leading to the registration of a criminal case on August 31.
