Sikkim: Amid Heavy Flood Threat by Sikkim’s Teesta River, Govt Schools Shut Down
Northeast Desk, 4th October: Following a flood alert issued by the State Disaster Management of Sikkim due to heavy rainfall causing the Teesta River to swell, the Education Department has made the decision to close all Government educational institutions until October 8.
The Teesta River has risen above the danger level, likely due to a cloudburst on October 4. This has resulted in the submersion of several low-lying areas, and there have been reports of vehicles, portions of ATTC college, and NH-10 being swept away. Tragically, there are reports of some army personnel being carried away by the floods.
Reports indicate a looming threat of further damage as South Lhonal Lake teeters on the brink of an outburst that could trigger flash floods. Moreover, there is a heightened risk of the South Khonak River overflowing, pointing to a potentially volatile situation.
