PM Modi speaks to Sikkim CM after flash flood, assures support
Northeast, 4th October: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 4 held discussions with Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang to assess the situation in the state following a sudden flood in the Teesta River.
During the conversation, he reassured the Chief Minister of complete support.
“Spoke to Sikkim CM Shri @PSTamangGolay and took stock of the situation in the wake of the unfortunate natural calamity in parts of the state. Assured all possible support in addressing the challenge. I pray for the safety and well-being of all those affected,” Modi said on X.
Intensive search operations were initiated as 23 army personnel were reported missing, and 41 vehicles were submerged in the slush. The aftermath of a glacial lake outburst in north Sikkim, which occurred late on Tuesday night, resulted in the recovery of five deceased individuals.
A high-ranking official from the Central Water Commission (CWC) confirmed that the outburst had originated from the Lhonak lake in north Sikkim. Additionally, there were reports of approximately 30 individuals missing due to the flash floods.
Prabhakar Rai, the director of the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, clarified that the precise number of missing persons has not yet been confirmed. As of now, there are verified reports of seven people unaccounted for.
