Guwahati: Guard Wall at Assam State Zoo Collapses Amidst Heavy Rains

Guwahati, 5th October: The continuous and heavy rainfall in Guwahati has taken its toll on the safety infrastructure, leading to the collapse of a guard wall surrounding the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden. This incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, has raised concerns not only for the animals within the zoo but also for the safety of nearby residents.

The collapsed guard wall, located on the Geetanagar side, gave way under the pressure of the relentless rain. Residents in the area have expressed their concerns, noting that the condition of the guard wall had been deteriorating over time. They claim to have lodged repeated complaints about its precarious state, but no action was taken.

Compounding the issue, the continuous downpour in the region has further weakened the guard wall’s structure. Thursday’s heavy rainfall proved to be the breaking point, resulting in a breach in the zoo’s perimeter. Local residents are now worried that animals from the zoo might venture out into the surrounding area if the wall is not promptly repaired.

This incident is part of a broader crisis gripping the city, as heavy rains have led to flooding in several low-lying areas. It underscores the urgent need for authorities to address both immediate safety concerns and long-term infrastructure maintenance to ensure the well-being of both the city’s residents and its wildlife.
