Central Government Grants Rs 44.80 Crore for Sikkim Flash Flood Relief
National Desk, 6th October: The Central Government has given its approval for the allocation of Rs 44.80 crore to Sikkim from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for the fiscal year 2023-24. These funds are designated for the purpose of implementing relief measures for individuals impacted by flash floods.
The authorization for this allocation was granted by Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation. Furthermore, the Ministry of Home Affairs has established an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) tasked with evaluating the extent of damages incurred as a result of the flash floods. Additional assistance will be provided based on the findings of this assessment.
On October 4, the Teesta river saw a surge in water levels due to a combination of factors including Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF), cloud bursts, and flash floods, resulting in extensive destruction.
The Central Government is closely monitoring the situation and extending support to the Sikkim Government. This assistance encompasses the deployment of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), utilization of Indian Air Force helicopters, involvement of Army personnel, and the mobilization of technical teams from various ministries dedicated to infrastructure restoration.
