Sikkim: Dr. Sharman Rai Chairs Meeting on Animal Relief Efforts After Flash Floods

Northeast Desk, 7th October: Dr. Sharman Rai, PD cum Secretary of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) Department, Government of Sikkim, led a crucial official meeting to assess the impact of the recent flash flood in the state. Senior officials from the AH&VS Department convened to discuss animal casualties and relief measures in the aftermath of the devastating flood.

During the meeting, officials presented comprehensive reports detailing the extent of animal casualties and the immediate response efforts in the hardest-hit areas. Dr. Rai commended the response teams and emphasized the importance of preventing further animal casualties.

The meeting also focused on the availability and pricing of essential animal feeds and fodder. Dr. Rai stressed the need to prevent price gouging by vendors and called for close monitoring of feed and concentrate prices to ensure affordability for farmers and animal owners. Efforts to assess the availability of these crucial items with local vendors were discussed.

Relief efforts were another key topic, with Dr. Rai urging the Managing Director of Sikkim Milk Union to ensure milk availability despite collection and road challenges. Stray animal welfare, particularly access to food, was also a priority concern.

Officials discussed upcoming programs, including the distribution of free cows to affected communities. Compensation for animal deaths due to the flash flood and Lumpy Skin Disease was addressed, with plans to support affected farmers.

The meeting highlighted the AH&VS Department’s commitment to animal welfare and supporting affected communities. Dr. Rai stressed the importance of coordinated efforts and partnerships in providing timely assistance and relief to those impacted by the flood.
