Tripura CM takes strong stance against coercive donations during Durga Puja, Instructs police to enforce strict measures
Northeast Desk, 11th October: Prior to Durga Puja, Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha issued strict directives to the police, urging them to take decisive action against individuals who were forcibly collecting puja subscriptions by stopping vehicles on the road in the state.
Dr. Saha conveyed this during the inauguration of the ‘Fish Transhipment Yard’ situated in Nagicherra, on the outskirts of Agartala city.
“I find it deeply concerning to witness people forcefully collecting puja subscriptions by halting vehicles on the roads. Such activities are entirely illegal and disheartening, using the guise of puja to extort money. What kind of culture is this? We observed such practices during the previous government’s tenure. I have conveyed to the police that our government will not tolerate these actions and have instructed them to take stringent measures. It has become an undesirable habit,” Dr. Saha emphasized.
The ‘Fish Transhipment Yard’ was established with a budget of approximately Rs. 3.50 crore, with the assistance of the Special Plan Assistant, Agartala Municipal Corporation, and Rural Development Department.
The Chief Minister highlighted that this new facility would play a significant role in reducing traffic congestion in Agartala city and maintaining cleanliness in market areas.
“We cannot convert forested land into a modernized city, as 67% of our land is covered by forests. We are focusing on development in areas without forests. The land allocation for the Fish Transhipment Yard dates back to 2017, but construction began after our government took office. This developmental approach extends beyond this site and is happening in various other places. Development is synonymous with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and both the Central and State governments, led by the BJP,” Dr. Saha added.
