Assam: Wild Elephant Dies Under Suspicion of Electrocution in Goalpara District
Guwahati, 16th October: The ongoing menace of wild elephants in Goalpara district took a tragic turn as a female wild elephant was found dead in the Sesapani Rangrampara area near Dudhnai during the early hours of Sunday.
Forest officials swiftly initiated a preliminary investigation upon reaching the scene. While the exact cause of the elephant’s death remains unknown, there is a strong suspicion that the jumbo may have fallen victim to electrocution.
In an effort to deter elephants from entering the area, it is believed that some individuals installed electric fencing due to the presence of paddy fields in the vicinity. Post-mortem examinations will be carried out by the department as part of the investigation.
The deceased elephant was approximately 20 years old and was identified as a female. A forest official stated that a probe will be initiated to identify the culprits behind the electric fencing. Legal proceedings will be launched against those responsible.
The area has been grappling with the persistent issue of wild elephants causing significant damage, including casualties and property destruction. Locals are urging the government, local administration, and the forest department to find a solution to address this ongoing problem. Just recently, another wild elephant fell victim to electrocution in the Krishnai Shalpara area, emphasizing the urgency of resolving the conflict between human settlements and wild elephants.
