Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Two Senior Advocates as Judges for Gauhati High Court
National Desk, 18th October: In a significant development, the Supreme Court Collegium announced its recommendation for the appointment of two eminent senior advocates, Unni Krishnan Nair and Kaushik Goswami, as judges of the Gauhati High Court.
The initial proposal for their appointment had been put forth by the Gauhati High Court Collegium on May 29. This decision follows a meticulous consultative process, which involved taking into consideration the views of constitutional authorities from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland, as well as senior judges with a deep understanding of the Gauhati High Court’s functioning. The valuable inputs from the Union Department of Justice were also factored in.
Unni Krishnan Nair garnered a unanimous positive opinion from all four consultee-judges, despite facing an adverse observation regarding his personal integrity from the Department of Justice. The Supreme Court Collegium, recognizing his extensive practice and significant contributions, particularly reflected in his high professional income and the number of reported judgments, decided to recommend his elevation to the Gauhati High Court.
Kaushik Goswami’s candidacy, on the other hand, encountered no integrity issues and received positive feedback from the consultee judges. Consequently, the Supreme Court Collegium endorsed his appointment as a judge for the Gauhati High Court.
The recommendations for the appointment of these accomplished advocates reflect the commitment to ensuring the highest standards of justice and expertise on the bench of the Gauhati High Court. The legal community and the judiciary eagerly await the finalization of these appointments.
