Irdai Urges quick Flood Claim Settlement in Sikkim After Teesta River Deluge

Northeast Desk, 19th October: The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) has issued a call to action for general insurers and standalone health insurance providers to ensure the prompt settlement of claims following the devastating floods in Sikkim. Triggered by a cloudburst on October 4, flash floods along the Teesta River resulted in widespread destruction and the unfortunate loss of 40 lives.

Irdai’s directive emphasizes the need for insurers to mobilize all available resources, including surveyors, loss adjusters, and investigators, to facilitate the expeditious settlement of claims arising from the flood’s aftermath. The regulatory authority has advised insurers to establish a 24×7 helpline and special claims desks at the district level, appointing Claims Settlement Authorities to ensure the swift processing and settlement of claims.

Furthermore, Irdai encourages insurers to expedite claim payments and on-account settlements while also promoting the use of electronic communication for correspondence with policyholders. This concerted effort aims to provide timely and efficient assistance to those affected by the havoc created by the Sikkim floods.
