From India to ‘Bharat’: NCERT Panel Recommends Name Change For New School Textbooks
National Desk, 25th October: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) panel’s proposal to rename the next set of books from ‘India’ to ‘Bharat’ has been unanimously accepted by its members, according to CI Issac, a panel member.
The proposal was initially put forward several months ago and has now been approved.
This recommendation from the NCERT panel follows ongoing speculation about whether the country will be officially renamed as ‘Bharat’.
The speculation gained momentum earlier this year when the Centre issued G20 dinner invitations on behalf of the “President of Bharat” rather than “President of India,” leading to a political controversy. Article 1 (1) of the Constitution defines the country’s name as “India, that is Bharat shall be the Union of States.”
In September, during the G20 Leaders Summit at the Bharat Mandapam in Delhi’s Pragati Maidan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nameplate displayed ‘Bharat’ while he addressed the gathering.
Videos and photos widely circulated on social media showcased the placard with ‘Bharat’ during PM Modi’s inaugural summit address.
