Assam: AASU Protests for Subansiri Hydropower Project Closure, Burns Effigy of Himanta Biswa Sarma
Guwahati, 28th October: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) staged a protest on October 28 demanding the immediate closure of the Subansiri Hydropower Project after a massive landslide in Gogamukh of Dhemaji.
During the demonstration, these youth organizations burned effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, issuing a stern warning of further action unless the hydropower project is shut down.
On October 27, a massive landslide prompted the closure of the No. 1 diversion tunnel on the left bank of the hydroelectric power plant, leading to a drop in the water level in the lower portion of the project.
As per reports, eight diversion tunnels have also been blocked, and local authorities have confirmed the loss of lakhs of fish due to the sudden decrease in the Subansiri River’s water level.
