Manipur student’s body declares ‘Friday’ a weekly holiday, state government deems it ‘completely illegal’
Northeast, 28th October: The Manipur government has strongly rebuked a recent notice issued by the Joint Student’s Body (JSB) based in Churachandpur, calling for the declaration of every Friday as a holiday for all government offices and educational institutions in the southern district. Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi, in a statement released on October 27, described the move as “totally illegal.”
The government’s statement expressed concern about a “deliberate attempt of renaming institutions and places” and publicly urging the adoption of a resolution to observe every Friday as a holiday by government institutions, including the offices of DCs, SPs, ZEOs, ADCs, and government schools and colleges in Churachandpur.
In response, the state government has implemented necessary preventive and precautionary measures, including robust mechanisms, to avert any untoward incidents. The government emphasized that such messages and public notices that advocate for a change in the working schedule pose a significant threat to communal harmony, peaceful co-existence, and internal and national security. It views this matter with utmost seriousness.
The public has been urged not to rely on such posts “which have been illegally generated” and to refrain from engaging in any unwarranted acts or violence. Previously, on October 26, the JSB had communicated its commitment to maintaining an education-friendly environment and, to make the government aware of their concerns, had passed a resolution on August 18, calling for all government institutions in Manipur to observe Fridays as holidays.
