External Affairs Minister Jaishankar Assures Support for Indian Nationals Facing Death Penalties in Qatar
National Desk, 30th October: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has met with the families of eight Indian citizens who have been sentenced to death in Qatar. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), he expressed the Indian government’s commitment to this critical case.
Jaishankar emphasized the high priority placed on the situation and conveyed the government’s deep understanding of the concerns and distress faced by the families. He reassured them that the government will continue to exert all possible efforts to secure the release of the detained Indians and will maintain close coordination with the families.
Last week, eight former Indian Navy personnel were handed death penalties by a Qatari court on charges of alleged spying for Israel, as reported by Reuters. The detainees had been arrested by Qatari intelligence in August 2022, although the charges had not been officially disclosed by either the Indian or Qatari governments.
