Meghalaya: Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) President Held for Alleged Extortion

Northeast Desk, 1st November: Bless Dkhar, the President of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), found himself in police custody on Monday following allegations of extorting money from overloaded goods carrier trucks crossing between Damsite and Umiam bridge. It is claimed that he demanded Rs1500 per truck for passage across the bridge.

The arrest was confirmed by Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police (City) for East Khasi Hills, who mentioned that Dkhar was detained in the Pohkseh area by the Laitumkhrah Police Station personnel. This apprehension was initiated following a circulated voice recording that allegedly captured Dkhar’s involvement in the extortion activities.

In the recording, he was heard negotiating prices for trucks to cross the Umiam Bridge, which had recently been subject to a weight limit directive by the Meghalaya High Court.
