Meghalaya: Section 144 imposed in Ri Bhoi, Umiam Bridge Restrictions on Heavy Vehicle Traffic

Northeast Desk, 7th November: The District Magistrate of Ri Bhoi district,Meghalaya’s Nongpoh, has implemented Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which prohibits the operation of heavy vehicles exceeding the approved limit of 15 MT gross weight on the Umiam bridge due to retrofitting of distress numbers, such as the girder beam and deck slab.

According to a Safety Audit report conducted by IIT Guwahati for the Bridge over Spillway of the Umiam Concrete Dam, it has been recommended to restrict the movement of heavily loaded vehicles on the bridge.

The Power Department, following a review of the IIT-G report, advised last week that heavy-loaded vehicles should not be allowed to travel on the Umiam dam bridge until the necessary retrofitting is completed.

Furthermore, the department emphasized that the maximum permissible load for the Umiam concrete bridge should not exceed 15 tons.

They have requested a revision of the existing order regarding the gross weight of vehicles crossing the bridge, suggesting a reduction in the limit from 20 tons to 15 tons.
