30 from Northeast Among 47 Middlemen Arrested for Facilitating Rohingya Infiltration in India
Guwahati, 8th November: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested 47 touts or middlemen across India for facilitating Rohingya infiltration into the country. Among them, 25 were arrested in Tripura and five in Assam.
This information was revealed by Special Director General of Police (SDPG), Harmeet Singh, during a press conference in Guwahati. The arrests come after a group of Rohingyas was intercepted in February while entering India through the Indo-Bangladesh border. Investigations indicated that illegal Rohingyas were entering India with the assistance of middlemen.
In response, the Assam Police increased vigilance and conducted operations, preventing 450 illegal migrants from entering the country. The middlemen involved in facilitating this illegal immigration were found to operate not only along the border but also in mainland India.
In July 2023, the Special Task Force (STF) in Assam arrested ten middlemen in connection with this issue. Recognizing the national security threat, the Assam Government requested the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to transfer the case to the NIA.
Following the investigation, the NIA, in collaboration with the Assam Police, conducted a country-wide operation, resulting in the arrest of 47 middlemen from seven states:
– Tripura: 25
– Assam: 5
– West Bengal: 3
– Karnataka: 9
– Haryana: 1
– Telangana: 1
– Tamil Nadu: 3
The arrests aim to address the issue of illegal Rohingya immigration and the involvement of middlemen, bolstering national security efforts.
