Uttarakhand to Pioneer Uniform Civil Code Implementation Next Week
National Desk, 11th November: Uttarakhand is poised to be the first state in the nation to introduce the Uniform Civil Code next week, according to sources.
A committee, led by retired Justice Ranjana Desai, will present a report to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami within the next few days. A special session of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly is scheduled after Diwali to pass the bill, providing legal status to the Uniform Civil Code.
In June, Retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, part of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) draft committee, confirmed the completion of the Uniform Civil Code’s drafting for Uttarakhand, soon to be submitted to the state government.
“The drafting of the proposed Uniform Civil Code of Uttarakhand is now complete,” Justice Desai stated. “The expert committee’s report and draft will be printed and submitted to the Government of Uttarakhand.”
Additionally, sources suggested that following Uttarakhand’s lead, Gujarat might also adopt the Uniform Civil Code before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, becoming the second state to do so.
