Assam: Panchayat Office in Boko Under Scrutiny Amidst Allegations of Corruption in Urinal Construction

Guwahati, 11th November: Despite the Assam Government’s strong stance against corruption, the 69th South West Boko Gaon Panchayat office in Kamrup district is under scrutiny for alleged massive irregularities in government construction projects.

Accusations arise from the construction of a urinal initiated for the year 2020-21, where it is claimed that the assigned vendor deviated from the project’s original plan.

In response to inquiries, Abdul Khalek, the secretary of the 69 GP, explained that due to space constraints for new construction, a decision was made during a meeting on the Panchayat office premises to repurpose the existing structure for the scheme.

However, sources allege discrepancies in the vendor’s execution, accusing them of repairing the wall instead of constructing anew. Moreover, despite the scheme’s specifications for a double-roofed structure, the vendor allegedly only repaired the roof shades.

When questioned about the matter, Secretary Abdul Khalek stated that they cannot oversee the work continuously but claimed to have halted construction upon learning of the issue.

Notably, a meeting held on September 11, 2023, at the 69 GP office, proposed the demolition of old toilets and construction of new ones, with the task assigned to vendor Biju Ali. The unfolding controversy raises questions about the efficacy of anti-corruption measures within the local administration.
