Assam: Gorkha Festival Celebrates Canine Companions during Tihar
Guwahati, 12th November: In the heart of the Gorkha community, a unique celebration unfolds, one where canine companions take center stage. The five-day Gorkha festival of Tihar commences with Kaag (Crow) Tihar, followed by Kukur (Dog) Tihar, a day dedicated to honoring the loyal canines.
Across Assam, Gorkha families embrace this joyous occasion, showering their beloved dogs with affection and gratitude. A sacred Tika, a red mark on the forehead, is bestowed upon these furry friends, symbolizing a blessing from the divine. Garlands of vibrant flowers adorn their necks, and delectable treats tempt their taste buds, creating a feast fit for canine royalty.
In the realm of Hindu beliefs, dogs hold a special significance, serving as messengers of Yamaraj, the God of Death. By honoring these faithful companions, it is believed that Yamaraj himself will be appeased, ensuring a harmonious passage beyond life’s earthly realm.
This vibrant festival, sharing some traditions with Diwali in the Hindu faith, extends its reverence beyond pet dogs, embracing even the strays that roam the streets. During Kukur Tihar, a generous array of treats awaits these canine companions, ranging from succulent meats and nourishing milk to hearty eggs and nutritious dog food.
Tihar, also known as Deepavali or the festival of lights, carries a deeper meaning. Gorkha homes are meticulously cleaned and adorned with illuminated lamps, creating a warm and welcoming ambiance. Prayers are offered to Goddess Laxmi, the embodiment of wealth and prosperity, seeking her blessings upon their homes and lives.
