Tripura on High Alert as Cyclonic Storm Threatens Bay of Bengal
Northeast Desk, 16th November: A Deep Depression over Westcentral Bay of Bengal has escalated concerns as it intensifies, prompting meteorological warnings for coastal regions. The latest update as of 0830 hours IST places the weather system near latitude 17.4°N and longitude 87.0°E, approximately 390 km east-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh). It has moved north-northeastwards at a speed of 17 kmph over the past 6 hours.
Forecasters anticipate the Deep Depression to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm within the next 24 hours, following its current trajectory. The projected path suggests a landfall along the Bangladesh coast, ranging from Mongla to Khepupara, with anticipated wind speeds of 60-70 kmph and gusts up to 80 kmph by early hours on November 18, 2023.
An upper air cyclonic circulation, coupled with an adjoining trough, has contributed to the atmospheric disturbance, necessitating heightened vigilance and preparedness in the affected regions.
Warnings and forecasts associated with the Deep Depression include light to moderate rainfall in coastal districts of West Bengal with isolated heavy rainfall on November 16th and 17th. Similar conditions are expected in coastal districts of north Odisha on November 16th. From November 16th to 18th, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may experience light to moderate rainfall, with isolated heavy rainfall, particularly in Mizoram & Tripura on November 17th. Additionally, south Assam and east Meghalaya are likely to see light to moderate rainfall on November 17th and 18th. Authorities are urging residents in these areas to stay updated on weather advisories and take necessary precautions.
