Assam: Additional SP (Crime) Bongaigaon detained in Cash-for-Jobs Scandal
Guwahati, 22nd November: In connection with the high-profile Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) cash-for-jobs scandal, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Nitumoni Das has been detained in Bongaigaon. His detention follows his inclusion in the list of candidates allegedly securing government positions through unfair means.
It needs to be noted that the Special Investigation Team, formed to investigate the scandal, had previously apprehended 34 civil servants from various locations, transporting them to Guwahati. Das becomes the 35th individual detained in connection with the APSC cash-for-jobs controversy.
The Assam government has initiated departmental proceedings against the 34 officers selected by the APSC for the 2013 batch, comprising Assam Civil Service, Assam Police Service, and other elite services. This action was prompted by a report submitted to the state government and a subsequent directive from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The CCE 2013 report highlighted abnormalities and malpractices during the examination’s execution.
The names of the 34 detained civil servants were implicated in the inquiry report of Justice (retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma Commission. The Commission also expressed concerns about the appointment of the then-APSC chairman, Rakesh Paul.
In its report, the Commission recommended that, if deemed appropriate by the government due to widespread irregularities and malpractices in CCE 2013, it should consider scrapping the selection of the entire CCE 2013 batch.
