Arunachal: Nocte Tribe Celebrates Chalo Loku Festival in Itanagar
Northeast Desk, 25th November: The capital city of Itanagar was aglow with tradition and festivity as the Nocte tribe joyously observed the Chalo Loku festival. The cultural celebration, deeply rooted in the Nocte community’s heritage in Tirap district, brought together communities at the TCL festival ground in Itanagar on November 25.
Mayor Tamme Phassang of Itanagar Municipal Corporation graced the festival, emphasizing the significance of preserving cultural heritage and fostering unity among communities. The Chalo Loku festival, an annual celebration in Khonsa, Deomali, Itanagar, and other Nocte-populated areas, marks the harvest of paddy and the transition from the old season to the new.
Originating in 1968 in Khonsa, the term “Chalo Loku” is a poetic blend of “Chha” or “Chhalo” (paddy) and “Loku,” derived from “Lofe” (to drive out) and “Kuh” (season). The festival holds historical importance, marking the construction of the first Rangsom Hum (prayer house) during its inaugural celebration.
The three-day festival comprises Phamlamja, Chamkatja, and Thanlangja. Phamlamja involves the sacrifice of buffaloes and pigs, while Chamkatja, the highlight, features the Chamkat ceremony. Thanlangja includes a vibrant dance festival at the Chief’s house and Paang premises, promoting community bonding.
Mayor Tamme Phassang extended his heartfelt wishes, stating, “Chalo Loku serves as a platform to strengthen the bonds among community members and promote understanding and goodwill among the people of the state.” He encouraged the youth to safeguard their cultural heritage, considering it the “most important jewel” of Arunachal Pradesh.
