Assam CM Assures Substantial Progress on Majuli Bridge Before Monsoons
Guwahati, 28th November: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced today that substantial progress is anticipated on the Brahmaputra river bridge, linking Majuli to Jorhat, before the onset of the next monsoon season.
Speaking in Majuli, CM Sarma assured the media that work on the bridge is progressing smoothly, with a directive for significant advancement before the upcoming monsoons.
“We aim for a 35% completion of the bridge. Seventy-two wells are required, and all but two are currently under construction. Casting air work is in progress on both sides. We expect notable progress before the monsoons, emphasizing the need for substantial advancements prior to the flood seasons,” stated CM Sarma.
While the target completion date for the 6.8-km two-lane bridge, along with approach roads, is set for 2026, CM Sarma emphasized that the actual completion timeline depends on the progress of the ongoing work.
“We aspire to have the bridge ready by 2026, necessitating extensive efforts over the Brahmaputra. Despite challenges faced by locals and labor issues last year, progress is now evident. The target is 2026, but flexibility exists; it might be slightly later. The key is substantial progress,” said CM Sarma.
The bridge, estimated at a cost of Rs 925.47 crore, is expected to enhance connectivity in the upper Assam region, linking the world’s largest river island, Majuli, to the mainland. Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the bridge two years ago on this day.
