Assam: One arrested by state police in crackdown against child marriage in South Salmara-Mankachar district

Guwahati, 29th November: Assam police apprehended an individual, Phulowar Hussain, in connection with a child marriage operation in the Kalapani police station area of South Salmara-Mankachar district.

Acting on a tip, the Kalapani police raided a village, capturing Hussain, who, three years ago, married a 13-year-old girl from Chirakhowa village.

The alleged unconstitutional husband from Chirakhowa village was taken into custody by Kalapani police and, following questioning, sent to the Hatshingimari court before being transferred to Dhubri district Jail.

Responding to this incident, the All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU) organized a motorcycle rally in Gossaigaon to protest and raise awareness against social issues like child marriage.

Inaugurated by AAMSU’s president, Rezaul Karim Sarkar, the rally witnessed significant participation with over a thousand motorcycles. The primary focus was on combating child marriage, a prominent concern in Assam, while also addressing other societal problems such as drug abuse, alcoholism, and child labor.
