Sikkim’s Green Legacy Takes Center Stage, Shines at COP28
Entertainment, 3rd December: Sikkim’s innovative environmental endeavor, “Mero Rukh Mero Santati,” took center stage at the esteemed United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28, held in Dubai on December 2, 2023. This initiative, conceptualized by the Government of Sikkim, garnered attention on the global platform, showcasing the state’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and climate action.
In a prerecorded video address at the India Pavilion, Chief Minister of Sikkim Prem Singh Tamang emphasized the significance of international collaboration in addressing climate change. He advocated for action-oriented coalitions, emphasizing the pivotal roles of every nation, community, and individual in hastening the transition to a green economy and achieving net-zero emissions. The Chief Minister underscored the responsibility of securing a prosperous life for future generations.
The video address served as a prelude to the presentation on “Mero Rukh, Mero Santati” by the Sikkim delegation. This pioneering program involves planting 108 trees to commemorate the birth of each child in Sikkim, aiming to establish a green legacy for the state. The initiative’s five pillars, encompassing aspects of spirituality, celebration, and carbon neutrality, received positive acclaim from the international audience.
Notably, this marked the first occasion where a policy initiative from Sikkim was selected for a side event at the India Pavilion during the Conference of Parties at the United Nations Climate Change Conference. The recognition at COP28 signifies a noteworthy stride for Sikkim’s environmental endeavors on the global stage.
