Zoramthanga to Submit Resignation Today Following Mizoram Election Result 2023

Northeast Desk, 4th December: Mizoram Chief Minister and Mizo National Front (MNF) chief Zoramthanga is poised to tender his resignation today, with sources indicating that he will meet Governor Hari Babu Kamabhampati at 4 pm to submit his resignation papers.

Zoramthanga’s decision to step down follows MNF’s defeat in the Mizoram elections, paving the way for the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) to assume government formation.

A significant blow for Zoramthanga came as he lost from the Aizawl East 1 seat by over 2000 votes. The defeat, with rival MNF candidate Lalthansanga securing 8,472 votes against Zoramthanga’s 6,364, marks a major setback for the incumbent Chief Minister.

As of now, MNF is leading in just ten seats, while ZPM has surged ahead with a commanding lead in 27 seats, positioning them favorably to shape the next government in Mizoram.

Earlier in the day, ZPM leader and the party’s chief ministerial candidate, Laduhoma, expressed his intention to meet Mizoram Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati in the coming days to stake a claim to form the government.

With a substantial lead over MNF, ZPM is poised to secure government formation in Mizoram, holding a notable advantage with 27 seats compared to MNF’s ten.

The Mizoram elections witnessed active participation, with over 80 percent of the state’s 8.57 lakh voters exercising their franchise. A total of 174 candidates, including 18 women, contested in the 40-member state assembly. The crucial halfway mark of 21 seats is required for a party to form a government in Mizoram.
