Zoram People’s Movement Sweeps Aizawl South I Constituency in Decisive Mizoram Assembly Win

Northeast Desk, 4th December: In a political upheaval on December 4, 2023, C. Lalsawivunga, representing the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), clinched victory in Aizawl South I during the Mizoram Assembly Elections.

Securing a resounding win, ZPM’s C. Lalsawivunga outpaced MNF’s K. Vanlalvena by a substantial margin, polling 9124 votes against the opponent’s 5499.

This triumph marked a pivotal shift in power dynamics, with the ZPM securing a commanding majority by winning 27 out of the 40 seats in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly.

Notably, C. Lalsawivunga had previously triumphed as an Independent candidate in the 2018 elections, securing 6808 votes and defeating the Mizo National Front (MNF) runner-up with a competitive margin of 1049 votes.

The November 7, 2023 elections showcased the ZPM’s dominance as they led in 27 of the 40 seats by noon, ultimately forming the state government. This contrasted sharply with the 2018 elections when the MNF took charge with Zoramthanga as the chief minister.

The Mizoram Legislative Assembly, integral to state governance, has witnessed a transformation in leadership, diverging from the previous status quo. Despite key positions held by figures like Governor Kambhampati Hari Babu since July 19, 2021, and Speaker Lalrinliana Sailo of the BJP since December 17, 2018, the recent elections signify a new trajectory for Mizoram under the ZPM banner.

The Deputy Speaker, H. Biakzaua of MNF, who assumed office on February 8, 2023, now operates within this altered political landscape.

The impressive voter turnout of 80.66% during the single-phase polls on November 7 underscores the active civic engagement in the democratic process.

With ZPM’s triumph in Aizawl South I and their overall majority, Mizoram’s political narrative is poised for a fresh chapter, with C. Lalsawivunga taking center stage in his constituency.
