Three Women Candidates Secure Seats for the first time in Mizoram State Assembly

Northeast Desk, 5th December: For the first time, Mizoram witnesses history as three women candidates secure victories in the 40-member state assembly. Lalrinpuii from Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) triumphs in Lunglei East, Baryl Vanneihsangi of ZPM wins Aizawl South-3, and Pravo Chakma from the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) clinches West Tuipui.

Lalrinpuii and Chakma defeat their male Congress counterparts, while Baryl Vanneihsangi emerges victorious against her MNF opponent.

Traditionally patriarchal, Mizoram’s Christian-dominated society witnesses a significant shift as these women create a milestone in the political landscape.

In the November 7 elections, 174 candidates, including 16 women, participated, marking a positive change from previous years with limited representation. The substantial female electorate of 4,39,026, outnumbering male voters, reflects a growing engagement of women in the electoral process.
