Arunachal Pradesh: Demand for Immediate Termination of Warden and Principal Following Ragging Incident

Northeast Desk, 6th December: The Students’ Union in Arunachal Pradesh has issued a strong demand for the immediate termination of the hostel warden and principal at Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy, responding to a series of ragging incidents. The union highlighted that junior students faced bullying, beating, and ragging by seniors for months, and despite lodging complaints, the principal failed to take action.

The union emphasized that the principal repeatedly evaded the complaints, promising to appoint a new warden and address the issues. However, no actions were taken, leading to a tragic incident. Following inquiries, the academy authorities rusticated ten students involved in violating the School Code of Conduct and hostel rules. A viral video circulating on social media initially claimed an incident of ragging at the academy, prompting investigations.

While the police clarified that the viral video was not from Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy but acknowledged a separate incident among boys, the gravity of ragging incidents has sparked nationwide concerns. Incidents like the one at Dibrugarh University, where a first-semester student jumped off a hostel building to escape ragging, underscore the severe consequences.

The regulatory framework by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and anti-ragging laws in states like Madhya Pradesh emphasize the collective effort to eradicate ragging. The Students’ Union’s demand aligns with the nationwide call for accountability and strict measures to ensure student safety. It reflects the crucial role of leadership in fostering a secure educational environment.
