Manipur: Voluntary Shutdown Grips Imphal Valley in Protest Against Mass Killing

Northeast Desk, 6th December: Several parts of Imphal Valley and adjoining districts came to a standstill due to a voluntary shutdown initiated by several individuals.

This collective action was a spontaneous protest against the tragic killing of 13 people in Tengnoupal district on December 4.

Commercial establishments, markets and schools remained closed in several parts of Imphal Valley including Imphal city.

The effects of the voluntary shutdown were also felt in districts such as Bishnupur and Kakching.

The mass cremation took place in the early hours at around 3.30 am, following the post-mortem conducted at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) at 6.30 pm the previous day.

The alleged ambush occurred in a wooded area near Leithao Village in Tengnoupal District, prompting a wave of public condemnation and the voluntary shutdown as a mark of protest.

The mourning and anger over the tragic incident reverberated through Imphal Valley and adjacent regions, underscoring the community’s collective call for justice and solidarity in the face of adversity.
