Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Names Giraffe Calf ‘Parijat’ at State Zoo

Guwahati, 9th December: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on December 9 unveiled the name for the giraffe born in the state zoo premises.

After receiving over 350 suggestions and conducting a lucky draw, the giraffe has been officially named ‘Parijat’. The naming process followed initial uncertainty about the name.

Himanta Biswa Sarma shared that raising the infant giraffe posed challenges, especially as the mother rejected him right after birth. However, with the assistance of a wildlife specialist from Mumbai and the efforts of zoo authorities, the giraffe calf received necessary care and attention.

The male Giraffe calf, welcomed to the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden in November, brought joy to CM Sarma, who shared the news on a platform ‘X’. He invited suggestions for the newborn’s name, engaging the public in the exciting event.

Expressing delight over the addition to the zoo, CM Sarma highlighted the need for a suitable name for the giraffe. The Assam State Zoo is home to four giraffes, including a male named ‘Vijay,’ who joined in 2019, and a female named ‘Vijaya,’ introduced in 2022. The birth of ‘Parijat’ marks a significant and heartening development in the zoo’s conservation efforts.
