Administrative Crunch Hits Indian Police Service as 3,393 IPS Positions Remain Vacant
National Desk, 12th December: As of March 16th, 2023, the Indian Police Service (IPS) is grappling with a substantial administrative crunch, with a total of 3,393 vacant positions across IAS, IPS, and IFS officers.
It’s crucial to note that state governments lack the authority to transfer IPS officers for Central deputation.
The process is governed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, overseeing cadre allocation, recruitment, training, empanelment, deputation, and other IPS-related policy decisions.
Responding to a question from Lok Sabha Member Vijay Vasanth, MoS Home Nityanand Rai clarified that the central deputation of IPS officers is regulated under the IPS (Cadre) Rules 1954 and the IPS Tenure Policy, 2010 (as amended).
These rules don’t provide for State Governments to transfer IPS officers to Central Deputation. The Ministry of Home Affairs invites nominations from States/Cadres for Central deputation, and officers are appointed based on suitability to fill the vacancies at various levels.
