Assam CM Announces Ban on Polygamy, Paving the Way for Uniform Civil Code Implementation
Guwahati, 15th December: In a significant move, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared the prohibition of polygamy in the state, with the new regulation scheduled to take effect on February 4. During an event, Chief Minister Sarma provided insights into the impending legislation, emphasizing that men will be restricted from marrying more than one woman until obtaining a legal divorce. The proposed law aims to bring about this change officially on February 4.
Expressing gratitude for the support received, Chief Minister Sarma noted, “Our Muslim mothers, sisters, and brothers have shown tremendous support for this initiative, recognizing the need for progressive change.”
Additionally, Chief Minister Sarma hinted at Assam’s trajectory towards the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He underscored that the ban on polygamy marks the initial phase of the broader UCC plan, which seeks to standardize personal laws across diverse communities in the state.
Chief Minister Sarma further disclosed that Assam plans to follow the footsteps of Gujarat and Uttarakhand in implementing the Uniform Civil Code once it proves successful in these states. The announcement signifies Assam’s commitment to ushering in progressive reforms in personal laws, echoing broader changes across the nation.
