Assam: BPF leader, Minister Chandan Brahma to join UPPL!

Guwahati, 15th December: In a notable political development, Chandan Brahma, a prominent Bodo politician and former Minister of Culture in the Sarbananda Sonowal ministry (2016-2021), is gearing up for a significant shift in his political trajectory. Brahma, previously aligned with the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), is now on the brink of joining the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL). This strategic move follows the BPF’s recent electoral performance, securing only four out of the 12 contested seats in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) during the Assam Assembly elections.

Having been an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2016, the BPF found itself replaced by the UPPL as the BJP’s new alliance partner in the BTR. The UPPL, with backing from the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), has risen as a substantial political force in the region, particularly after the Bodo Accord of February 2020. Winning six seats in the BTR, the UPPL signifies a notable shift in the area’s political dynamics.

Chandan Brahma’s decision to align with the UPPL is widely perceived as a strategic move, capitalizing on the prevailing political momentum in the BTR. His experience and influence within the Bodo community are anticipated to fortify the UPPL’s standing in the region. This political transition underscores the dynamic nature of Assam’s political landscape, characterized by evolving alliances and fluid party affiliations.
