Ram Nath Kovind-Led Committee on ‘One Nation, One Election’ to Convene Today

National desk, 18th December: The high-level committee on ‘One Nation, One Election,’ led by former president Ram Nath Kovind, is set to convene on Monday to assess the progress made thus far, including the responses from political parties regarding the concept of holding simultaneous polls. While the meeting is described as “informal,” reports suggest that discussions may center around the feedback received from political entities.

In its initial meeting, the committee opted to gather the perspectives of political parties on the matter. Recently, the panel reached out to parties, urging them to share their views and participate in an interaction on a “mutually agreed date.” Subsequently, a reminder was sent to ensure a comprehensive response.

Letters were dispatched to six national parties, 33 state parties, and seven registered unrecognised parties, inviting their suggestions on the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal. The committee has also taken into account the insights provided by the Law Commission regarding simultaneous polls. There is a possibility that the law panel might be called upon again to further discuss the issue.
