Union HM Amit Shah tables 3 new criminal law bills
National Desk, 20th December: Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented three new criminal law bills in parliament today. Explaining the provisions, Shah stated that the proposed law includes the possibility of capital punishment for those convicted of mob lynching. He emphasized that these bills align with the spirit of the original Indian Code of Justice, aiming to eradicate colonial laws from the justice system.
Shah highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative in introducing these bills, emphasizing the government’s commitment to updating outdated laws. He mentioned the replacement of the Indian Penal Code of 1860 with the ‘Indian Judicial Code’, ‘Indian Civil Defense Code’ replacing CrPC 1998, and the Indian Evidence Bill in place of the Indian Evidence Act 1872, intending to be implemented nationwide.
The focus of the new criminal laws shifts towards addressing crimes against women/children, their impact on the human body, and the nation’s security. Shah clarified the removal of the sedition law in the new criminal laws while ensuring that actions against the nation would still be punishable. This legislative move signifies a significant shift in prioritizing contemporary concerns and updating legal frameworks for a more just and relevant justice system.
