Northeast Region Tops List with 95 Identified “Black Spots” on Assam Roads

Guwahati, 24th December: In a concerning revelation, the central government has pinpointed 95 “black spots” in Assam, marking the highest count in the entire Northeast region. These notorious “black spots” on roads are notorious for their high susceptibility to accidents.

Guwahati, the bustling city in Assam, accounts for a significant portion, hosting at least 30 known “black spots.” Acknowledging the severity of the situation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed district commissioners across the state to identify and address these hazardous locations promptly.

“Black spots” are brief stretches on roads where accidents or fatalities occur recurrently. Assam’s extensive network of national highways, totaling 3889.44 km, is categorized under various authorities, including the state PWD (NH Wing), NHIDCL, NHAI, and BRO.

The central government’s data highlights that Assam leads with 95 black spots on its national highways, followed by 17 in Nagaland, ten in Sikkim, nine in Tripura, and five each in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. Additionally, Meghalaya and Mizoram each have one identified black spot.

Of the 95 black spots in Assam, efforts have been made to rectify 47, leaving 48 yet to be addressed. Disturbingly, the accident history associated with these black spots in Assam reveals a total of 436 accidents in the past five years, with 304 of them proving fatal. The urgency to address and mitigate these risk zones is underscored by the alarming statistics associated with these accident-prone stretches.
