Bangladeshi Woman Arrested in Tripura for Illegal Border Crossing After Marriage
Northeast Desk, 25th December: In a late-night operation, Tripura Police arrested a Bangladeshi woman who had crossed the international border after marrying a resident of Tripura in Bangladesh. The arrest took place in Kadamtala under the Dharmanagar Sub-division of Tripura’s North district. Notably, Tripura shares an 856km long international boundary with Bangladesh.
Commenting on the incident, Sibu Ranjan Dey, Officer-in-Charge of Kadamtala Police Station, revealed that Joli Rani Das (25) was jointly detained by Border Security Force (BSF) jawans and Tripura Police for illegally entering Tripura from Bangladesh.
According to Officer Dey, Sudhanshu Das (50), a resident of Ward No. 5 of Bajendra Nagar Village Panchayat in the Kadamtala Police Station area, had crossed the international border with Joli Rani Das. The couple had tied the knot in Bangladesh and crossed the border unlawfully. Their relationship had blossomed during Sudhangshu Das’s visit to Bangladesh a year ago, leading to their marriage at a local Jagannath temple in Bangladesh on the 17th of this month.
However, upon their return to India, the situation took a legal turn. Sushil Das, another individual, reportedly assisted Sudhangshu and the woman in crossing the border illegally. While both accused individuals, Sushil and Sudhangshu, who are residents of Tripura, are currently on the run, Joli Rani Das has been apprehended by the authorities.
The police officer informed reporters that the detained Bangladeshi woman, Joli Rani Das, will be presented before the court today to face legal proceedings. The incident highlights the complexities surrounding cross-border relationships and the legal consequences of unlawful border crossings.
