Assam: Pregnant Golden Langur Killed in Road Accident Near Kakaijana Reserve Forest
Guwahati, 25th December: Tension gripped the area near Kakaijana Reserve Forest in Bongaigaon district on December 25, as a rare Golden Langur lost its life in a collision with a vehicle on National Highway 17. Tragically, the deceased langur was pregnant.
Local residents suspect that the accident occurred as the Langur ventured out from the forest, likely in search of food, attempting to cross the national highway. This incident echoes previous occurrences of Golden Langurs falling victim to road accidents along the same stretch.
Both police and forest officials were present at the scene, as widespread anger surged among locals. The timing of the incident, just before the Golden Langur festival in Bongaigaon, intensified the community’s dismay.
Expressing their discontent, residents urged the Abhayapuri forest officer to implement necessary measures for the protection of Golden Langurs. The community paid homage to the deceased Golden Langur with a minute of silent prayer at the site of the tragic accident.
